Amazon FBA First Mile from China: 7 Mistakes That Cost Importers Money
Almost every FBA chargeback we see traces back to something that happened before the container was loaded. Here are the seven we run into most, and what to do instead.
1. Printing FNSKU labels at the factory
Factories often print the FNSKU before the shipment plan is created, or use a label that is too small, wrong resolution, or wrapped around a corner. Amazon scans it, fails, and the unit is marked unsellable.
Fix: print labels after the shipment plan exists, at the resolution Amazon specifies, on a flat surface โ and verify the PDF one last time before the run.
2. Ignoring the box weight ceiling
US standard boxes are capped at 50 lb / 22.7 kg unless the box contains a single oversized item, in which case it needs the correct label. Boxes over the limit get refused or repacked at your cost.
Fix: tell your factory the carton weight target up front, not after production. A 2 kg reduction in a 24 kg carton is a packing change, not a shipping problem.
3. Treating battery and cosmetic goods as general cargo
Lithium cells need UN38.3 test reports and an MSDS. Nail gel, polish and remover are frequently classified as dangerous goods. Carriers reject the booking at the gate โ or worse, accept it and then hold the container.
Fix: send the product spec and a photo of the label to your forwarder before booking. Battery and press-on nail cargo both have dedicated lanes for exactly this reason.
4. Splitting the batch without splitting the plan
One production run, three destination FCs, one shipment plan. The cartons get mixed, labels end up on the wrong pallet, and each FC receives units it did not expect.
Fix: label by destination FC at prep, not at loading. Our FBA prep center splits one batch across several warehouses and books each appointment separately.
5. Booking the ocean freight before the prep is scheduled
The container is booked, the cutoff is Friday โ and the goods are still unlabelled in the factory. Prep gets compressed into one night and mistakes happen.
Fix: work backwards. Prep days โ trucking to port โ cut-off โ sailing. If prep does not fit, move the sailing, not the prep.
6. Assuming DDP covers everything
DDP covers freight, both clearances, duty, VAT and delivery. It does not cover Amazon's own inbound placement fees, storage fees, or a rejected shipment. Those are separate line items and they are the ones that surprise people.
Fix: ask for a landed-cost sheet that lists freight, duty, prep and Amazon-side fees separately. Full breakdown is in our DDP vs DDU guide.
7. No photos before loading
When Amazon reports a damaged carton, the only defence is a timestamped photo of that carton in good condition at origin. Without it, you pay.
Fix: insist on carton photos with the label visible before the container is sealed. We photograph every finished pallet as standard.
